The course is taught over one year, full time, by a mix of Basins Group staff and industry professionals. A range of geological and geophysical subjects are taught covering the hydrocarbon industry value chain from acquisition, exploration and appraisal to development and production. A multidisciplinary approach takes students through investigation of outcrop analogues as well as geophysical investigation of subsurface hydrocarbon systems.

The petroleum industry is the largest employer of earth science graduates, with good employment prospects in the United Kingdom and overseas in oil companies, consultancies, service companies, government bodies, the financial sector, and in teaching and research. During the research project students normally have the opportunity to work within sponsor oil company offices, gaining valuable industrial experience.

MSc Polymer Materials Science and Engineering

You will need a UK 2.2 Honours degree in the following backgrounds; Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Physical Chemistry, Polymer Engineering, Composite Materials and Engineering, Biofunctional Materials, Metallurgy and Macromolecular Materials and Engineering. We can consider Biomaterials, Material Physics and other backgrounds on a case by case basis.


The masters course in Polymer Materials Science and Engineering, offered in partnership with the School of Chemistry, is multi-disciplinary: it provides Chemists, Materials Scientists and Engineers with a rich understanding of both traditional commodity plastics and speciality polymers with increasing applications in the biomedical and pharmaceutical fields, and in electronics and nanotechnology. The entry requirement to the programmes is normally a good honours degree in mathematics or a mathematically-related discipline or an equivalent overseas qualification in a mathematical subject.

MSc Reliability Engineering and Asset Management

The standard academic entry requirement for this Master's course is a Second Class UK honours degree or international equivalent, in a relevant science or engineering discipline.


The programme consists of course units which include various aspects of applied management and technology in the field of REAM. It is designed such that after enrolment participants already working in industry will benefit from the structure and content of the course in order to enhance their capability in Reliability Engineering and Asset Management. MSc Textile Technology (Technical Textiles)

You will need a UK lower-class (2.2) Honours degree in a Science, Engineering or Technology field, or equivalent International degree.


The complete Masters (MSc) course in Technical Textiles enables you to develop a high level of understanding of modern technical textiles, preparing you for a career in the textile or related industries as a manager or researcher, or for an academic career.

Graduates of this programme are expected to understand the whole process of converting fibrous materials into the end product and to be able to identify and analyse the appropriate material and production route for a specific end product. You will also have developed the expertise and skill to conduct quality evaluation of textile products.

MSc Thermal Power & Fluid Engineering

The standard academic entry requirement for this Master's programme is a Second Class UK honours degree, or international equivalent, in a relevant science or engineering discipline.


The objectives of this course are to produce postgraduate specialists with:

▪ advanced understanding of heat and fluid flow processes and their role in modern methods of power generation

▪ in-depth understanding of numerical and experimental techniques in heat and fluid flow

Thermal Power and Fluid Engineering Merit Award

The three students who achieve the highest performance in this MSc course in 2016-17 will receive an award.

The winners of the Thermal Power and Fluid Engineering Merit Award are presented with a certificate by the Head of the School, Prof Andy Gibson, and are awarded a cash prize. The awards are £3,000 for the top student, £2,000 for the second and £1,000 for the third student in each semester.
